The year’s second Grand Slam tournament will take place at Paris’ Roland-Garros from 21 May to 10 June 2018 and there are a number of top-competing candidates ready to take the women’s title. Here are the top 5 contestants to consider betting on this year.

5 French Open Betting Favourites

1. Serena Williams

Having won the 2017 Australian Open for the seventh time, while also being eight weeks pregnant, it seems there’s very little that this American tennis dynamo can’t overcome on the courts. She’s only recently returned to the tennis tour, having taken a year-long maternity break, and she didn’t play in the Australian Open this year feeling she wasn’t physically ready, however, Serena said she’s now back in action. While it will be tough for her to compete at top form after a break, Serena doesn’t go into any game with anything less than a win on her mind, and a French Open win would clock up a 24th Grand Slam title, so she’ll definitely be one to watch this year.

2. Garbine Muguruza

The 24-year-old Spanish superstar may have lost out in the Australian Open, but she already has two Grand Slam titles to her name – Wimbledon and the French Open – and ranked number one in the second half of 2017. She was not playing in peak performance in January, but the No. 3 ranked player still has time to work on her game. This champion definitely prefers clay courts and is a real contender for the 2018 title.

3. Simona Halep

After ending as runner-up in three Grand Slam titles, the 26-year-old Romanian is desperate to finally hold that winning trophy. This year’s Australian Open was particularly depressing, with Halep losing her number one spot, and Grand Slam hopes, to Carolina Wozniacki after gruelling marathon match which saw her injuring her ankle. But, she has reached the finals on the clay courts twice before so it’s definitely her terrain, which means – provided she’s in peak condition – she is a good bet to win this year’s French Open.

4. Maria Sharapova

After a 15-month doping ban, Sharapova returned to the tennis circuit with the Australian Open in January only to be thumped by Angelique Kerber in the third round, destroying any hopes of a Grand Slam win without Serena Williams around. The 30-year-old Russian tennis ace has five Grand Slam titles under her belt – two of them at Roland-Garros – and has the fire to get through to the finals. Watch this space.

5. Jelena Ostapenko

This Latvian player made her mark by snatching the 2017 French Open title at only 19 years of age with a particularly aggressive style of tennis. The World No. 7 lost out to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in the third round of the Australian Open but did manage to end 2017 as the WTA Tour Most Improved Player of the Year. Expect great things from this rising star.
